Last month Todd from the local band Crushdown came to me saying that they needed some cool promo shots and asked if I could create images of them that were edgy and portrayed the spirit of their music. It sounded like a challenge that I was ready to take on! While I normally wouldn’t use HDR to do portraits, I thought that it was a great way to get some gritty, dark images to complement the feel of their old school metal music.
Though HDR tends to dramatically increase contrast and magnify details, I tried to keep the images of the guys pretty faithful to reality while still enhancing the environment around them. I like the think of these images as a form of mediated reality: pictures that faithfully represent reality while bringing in a mix of what you perceive in your imagination at the same time.
Enjoy the shots and check out Crushdown playing on May 25th at the Avalon in Santa Clara!
Awesome shots, Joe!
That’s a subtle way of thkiinng about it.
