Is It Paradise…?

At the Ballgame, original photography by Joe Ercoli.

Paradise? Baseball, beer, warm weather… Pretty damn close! If only Arizona had a beach. Five of us packed ourselves into a thirty-two foot rented Winnebago and took turns driving all night from Northern California to Phoenix, AZ, last March to take in two games during Giants spring training. I’ve driven farther before, but not all in one shot like that. Would I do it again? Hell yea… and we’re already planning next year’s trip!

“Is baseball all that you went for?” you ask. No, I’m not even a big fan! Sure, I’ve been going to Giants games all of my life but I don’t know who’s who or what stats a batter has anymore. I went for the road and the adventure. You never feel more free than those moments on an open highway headed somewhere you’ve never been with the stereo cranked up and your face in the wind. Of course having 4 of your closest friends with you just adds to the adventure!

Since we drove all night getting down there, unfortunately there wasn’t much scenery to speak of. Yet we drove home during the day and I can’t really say that I missed much. I fell asleep in the middle of the desert for about 45 minutes (I wasn’t driving!) and when I woke up I could have sworn that we had yet to make any progress. Luckily, we made up on the adventure with our other stops in Arizona!

Good eatin’ at the Heart Attack Grill, shootin’ at the Scottsdale Gun Club, the night life on Mill Ave; We had it all, and then some. Thank you to Mike and Boo for their generous hospitality while we were there. We’ll be back next year, get started on that beach while we’re gone…
